I have to admit something…I always knew this part of the United States was beautiful, but my research exceeded all my expectations of what I thought I’d find! Not only did I find some places that immediately landed a spot on my bucket list, but I was floored learning that in a day you can walk the city streets and through the forests to a wild beach. There was only one thing left for me to do, see Northern California for myself. And I did. And I get the hype.
And now… I want to take you there for your elopement!
Answering all of your questions about getting married in Northern California:
What do I need to get legally married in the state of California?
MARRIAGE LICENSE: Go to any county clerk’s office in CA (many offer virtual appointments). Your marriage license must be obtained within 90 days of your wedding date. The marriage license fee is $113. You’ll need to come with a government issued ID – some counties may require a birth certificate as well, so check with the specific country clerk you’ll be going to!
OFFICIANT: You need an officiant!
WITNESSES: You’ll need at least one witness (this can be your photographer!)
A WHOLE LOTTA LOVE (optional but highly suggested 😉)
When is the best time of year to elope in NorCal?
FALL! Fall offers the least crowds, the warmest temps, and minimal fog compared to other months. Depending on what time you go in the fall you’ll be able to catch some of the leaves changing colors! You’ll experience highs in the 60s/70s and low in the 40/50s. Keep in mind that the further you move up the coast the cooler the temps will be!

Do we need to rent a car for our Northern California elopement?
YES! If you’re looking to explore outside of San Francisco and surrounding cities then it’s best to rent a car. You may have to drive up to 3 hours from a major airport to get to your destination due to the somewhat remote nature of Northern California. The 101 is an unbeatable scenic drive, if you have time to drive from SF up the coast to your elopement destination – you won’t regret it!
Do I need a permit for a public ceremony?
MOST LIKELY! For less than 50 people permits for State Parks can vary from $0-$300 and $100-$400 for National Parks. Each park has their own guidelines and application process. The sooner you pick your location and inquire about submitting a permit the better!
Tips for your…
City Elopement
Build traffic into your wedding timeline so you don’t feel rushed.
Pick 2-3 locations to explore.
Find a fun place to eat or activity to do the day of your elopement.
Beach Elopement
The tides can make or break your beach spot. To prevent being caught at high tide check out the California Tide Charts.
The beach will be less busy at sunrise and during the weekdays.
Check to see what you’re permitted to bring with you on the beach. Some beaches don’t allow things such as alcohol or decor.
Mountain Elopement
Trails are typically less busy during the week, sunrise, and sunset.
Be sure to have on proper footwear, no shoe is so cute that it’s worth a twisted ankle.
Be prepared for the elements (sunscreen, layers, water bottle, snacks, etc.).
Perfect Northern California Elopement Locations
From the northernmost point of California to just past San Jose here are 14 breathtaking elopement locations. Follow along on my map!
Come ready to get your feet wet! Say “I do” amidst canyon walls carpeted by lush ferns. Spend the rest of the day exploring the old growth forests of Redwood National Park and venture out to the beach to catch sunset.
Mt. Shasta boasts every mountain scenery you can dream of! Stay in the town of Mt. Shasta before venturing out to the wilderness and historically spiritual area of the Cascades.
This coastal town is a hidden gem with views for days, charming places to stay, and great places to eat. Hide away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, and relax where the forest meets the Pacific.
The rushing waters of Burney Falls drop 120 feet into a pool of bright turquoise waters. Find a place amongst the rocks, feel the mist on your face, and take in the sheer magnitude of these incredible falls. Want to hit another waterfall the day of your elopement? Take a quick drive down the road to McCloud Falls.
There is something truly magical about the bluffs and beaches of Mendocino. Explore hidden coves, quiet beaches, and the rugged coast. There are plenty of locations that you can drive up to take in the view and easy hikes with big scenery payoffs.
Right off Highway 1 you’ll find a Stump Beach just below the cliffs. A super short (and slightly steep) trail will lead you to one of the most beautiful beaches on the West Coast. Spend the day hanging in this deep cove or explore the rest of Salt Point!
8. Cypress Tree Tunnel in Point Reyes
LOCATION: Inverness, CA
PERMIT REQUIRED: YES
SCENERY: cypress trees, rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, lighthouse
Want Big Sur vibes without the drive? Just a short 1 hour drive from San Francisco you’ll find Point Reyes National Seashore and everything you’re looking for! A must see is the famous Cypress Tree Tunnel – words don’t do it justice!
9. Lands End at Golden Gate National Recreation Area
The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge and while there are a lot of places to take in the view, Lands End is one of the best (and least crowded)! City Hall is great if you’re wanting a chic, classic, and fun elopement – San Francisco City Hall however is next level gorgeous. Invite up to 6 of your friends, take pictures throughout the building, and spend the rest of the day exploring this iconic city.
You’d never guess this kind of place could exist in a city. Strolling around Joaquin Miller Park is like being in a mossy fairytale. Each and every trail is uniquely beautiful – venture through the woodlands to find the perfect secluded spot for your ceremony for 2.
Another beach!? Yes – but not just any beach. Half Moon Bay is known for its wide, sandy beaches and colorful wildflowers. There is a softness to this area compared to the more rugged coastline further north.
The old-growth redwood forest of your dreams. Wander below the canopy of giant trees and get in touch with the magnitude of nature. Every time of year here is breathtaking, but to beat the crowds it’s best to plan your elopement for late fall!
